Welcome to the IDIS Basin Kits section !

Introduction
The IDIS Basin Kits provide baseline data layers (vector and grid) for each of the IWMI and CPWF basins covering various domains such as climate, agriculture, soil, land use, topography, etc. For a complete list of the baseline of the data layers and their associated metadata click here . The IDIS Basin Kits are designed to help researchers and their teams reduce the time required to integrate baseline datasets, carry out spatial analysis and establish preliminary conclusions.

Integrated data layers
For each basin all baseline layers are integrated into a common projection system – as a result researchers and their teams don’t have to spend to integrate layers from different sources together into a common projection system. All layers are clipped to each of the basin’s boundaries - as a result each basin kit contains only data relevant to the basin in a compact storage size.

Spatial analysis
All baseline layers can be used in any combination of spatial (vector and/or grid) operators (buffer, topology, geostatistics) and/or attribute queries – as a result each basin kit is a ready-to-use product for researchers and their teams.

Preliminary conclusions
All baseline layers for each basin kit feature reliable and documented scientific data – as a result researchers and their teams can comfortably derive preliminary conclusions that serve as a basis for further investigation.

While there an increasing amount of high resolution imagery available in Google Earth for countries of the South there remains a critical lack of vector layers to represent baseline information. By porting the vector layers of the IDIS Basin Kits to Google Earth the IDIS Team helps IWMI-CPWF researchers and their scientific teams explore the geography of benchmark basins through Google Earth. Google Earth has become a de facto tool for non-GIS and GIS researchers to explore the geography of basins and remote locations.

In the table below you will find links to download and view IDIS Basin Kits vector layers which have been ported to Google Earth layers. Just click on the relevant Google Earth logo in the table below to open its corresponding layer into Google Earth. If Google Earth is not yet started your computer will start it automatically. The Google Earth view will extend the extent of the layer. Once a layer is loaded you can then click on another layer link to add it to your view.

These vector layers are to be used at 1:1,000,000 scale. They were clipped from a global vector database called Vector Map (VMap) Level 0. Vmap0 is an updated and improved version of the National Imagery and Mapping Agency's (NIMA) Digital Chart of the World (DCW®). Vmap0 is the only freely available vector database that has a global coverage required for the spread of the IWMI-CPWF basins. To learn more about Vmap0 and/or download it click here
